Cheung Chau Island

My sister Rita has a novel in progress about a teenage Chinese American who is searching for her identity as she travels to Cheung Chau with her mother and younger brother. A majority of the events were drawn from Rita’s  experiences on this island so her story brought back fond memories for both of us.

Thirty minutes by ferry from Hong Kong, this small island is still a quant fishing village. There are no motor traffic so tourists and locals travel by foot or by bicycle. All around the dumbbell-shaped island are sampans and beaches and there is even a cave named after an infamous pirate, Cheung Po Tsai, who used to stash his booty there. Cheung Chau Island is full of history, memories, and is the perfect setting for my sister’s novel.
